Mil­i­tary pays re­spects to fallen sol­diers on Cyprus

Mil­i­tary per­son­nel at­tend a memo­rial ser­vice at the Tymvos Make­donitissa mil­i­tary ceme­tery in Ni­cosia yes­ter­day for the sol­diers who lost their lives fight­ing the 1974 Turk­ish in­va­sion of Cyprus. The in­va­sion re­sulted in some 3 per­cent of the Is­land be­ing cap­tured by Turk­ish forces be­fore a cease­fire was an­nounced, then Turk­ish troops sub­se­quently oc­cu­pied 40 per­cent of the is­land. Last month, Cyprus Pres­i­dent Ni­cos Anas­tasi­ades and Turk­ish Cypriot leader Mustafa Ak­inci agreed to re­sume United Na­tions-buffered peace talks aimed at re­uni­fy­ing the is­land.
