Ex-minister seeks release
Jailed former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos lodged a request yesterday with an Athens appeals court for his early release, citing poor health and his advanced age. The 77-year-old former PASOK strongman is serving a 20-year prison sentence for money laundering and for taking kickbacks from defense deals. Tsochatzopoulos has already served four years of his sentence in prison and his attorney said he should be released on humanitarian grounds. The court is expected to issue its ruling on the request today.
