Court nixes ex-minister’s appeal
An Athens appeals court yesterday rejected a request for early release by former Defense Minister Akis Tsochatzopoulos who is serving a 20-year jail sentence for money laundering. In his request, the former minister had cited his advanced age as well as health issues. A prosecutor told the court yesterday that Tsochatzopoulos could commit new money laundering offenses if released. She also noted that the health issues raised by the former minister could be treated in prison. Tsochatzopoulos, 77, was found guilty in 2013 of money laundering in connection to kickbacks he is alleged to have received from defense deals.
