Chios mastic gum trees razed by fire again
A soldier tries to put out an armored vehicle during a raging wildfire on the eastern Aegean island of Chios yesterday. The military was helping firefighters battle a large blaze that broke out in the early hours yesterday on the southern part of the island, razing hundreds of mastic gum trees, which produce one of the island’s key exports, before the August harvest. Authorities evacuated the villages of Lithi, Mesta and Elata, and have declared a state of emergency. Chios was just starting to recover from a large fire in the same area in 2012.
