Rou­vikonas leader faces trial after em­bassy at­tack

A man be­lieved to be a lead­ing mem­ber of the anarchist group Rou­vikonas (Ru­bi­con) has been charged with van­dal­ism and re­fus­ing to be fin­ger­printed after al­legedly par­tic­i­pat­ing in an at­tack on the Turk­ish Em­bassy in Athens on Tues­day. The sus­pect, who was not iden­ti­fied, faces trial on both charges be­fore a mis­de­meanors court. Po­lice ques­tioned 11 peo­ple fol­low­ing the at­tack on the em­bassy, dur­ing which as­sailants splashed red and black paint across the build­ing’s en­trance and threw fly­ers protest­ing a crack­down in Turkey fol­low­ing a failed coup in the neigh­bor­ing coun­try. Rou­vikonas has been linked to nu­mer­ous acts of van­dal­ism in­clud­ing smash­ing ticket ma­chines at the Athens metro, fire­bomb­ing po­lice sta­tions and dam­ag­ing the of­fices of the state pri­va­ti­za­tion agency, TAIPED.
