Tem­pest stuns western Crete

Flights were can­celed and trees up­rooted yes­ter­day in western Crete af­ter it was hit by a vi­o­lent storm that caused tor­ren­tial rain and floods in the wider re­gion of Ha­nia, in­clud­ing the vil­lages of Aski­fou, Sfakia and Falasarna and the Sa­maria Gorge.

Ac­cord­ing to the Na­tional Ob­ser­va­tory of Athens, wind speeds reached 85 kilo­me­ters per hour, ground­ing flights to and from Ha­nia In­ter­na­tional Air­port.

Storms also struck the south­ern Pelo­pon­nese, with heavy rains af­fect­ing Cape Malia and the town of Monem­va­sia, while the Na­tional Me­te­o­ro­log­i­cal Ser­vice (EMY) sta­tion on the is­land of An­tikythira recorded wind speeds of up to 100 kilo­me­ters per hour.
