Probe turns to jewelers
Police in Attica are investigating suspected ties between members of two linked criminal organizations that conducted dozens of burglaries at luxury homes and jewelry shops, with stores specializing in the evaluation of precious stones in central Athens, as well as pawnbrokers across the country. Over 30 suspects arrested last week in the crackdown on the two gangs were expected to face prosecutors today and tomorrow. The criminal ring is believed to be led by leading figures of the Roma community. The suspects, who lived in luxury villas in Western Attica and Thessaloniki and drove expensive cars, would allegedly contact police during the robberies to report bogus incidents and divert attention.
