Speaker postpones debate
The debate by parliamentary speakers to reconvene the National Broadcasting Council (ESR) has been postponed by House Speaker Nikos Voutsis until Thursday. The debate was scheduled to take place yesterday in a bid reach consensus, so far elusive, after the Council of State, the country’s highest administrative court, had deemed the government’s TV licensing auction unconstitutional. Voutsis cited the government reshuffle late Friday when deferring the debate. Sources nonetheless claimed yesterday that Voutsis postponed the debate because there was a lack of common ground between the government and the main opposition New Democracy, which has insisted that the TV law drafted by State Minister Nikos Pappas – stipulating that the authority of overseeing a TV license auction be transferred from the ESR to him – is abolished.
