Soccer league is suspended after ref’s home burnt down
All national league and cup competitions have been suspended indefinitely after arsonists targeted the home of Greece’s refereeing committee (KED) chief, Giorgos Bikas, the Hellenic Football Federation (EPO) said yesterday.
The house at Ierissos in Halkidiki, northern Greece, was torched on Tuesday night, with the fire service treating the incident as arson. The blaze spread to neighboring houses. “EPO’s Temporary Administrative Com- mittee decided at an extraordinary meeting today to suspend all national soccer championships until the announcement of the outcome of the investigation into the causes of the fire by the fire service, when EPO will re-examine its position.”
The incident came less than a week after another KED member, Giorgos Tsachilidis, was threatened by two men on his doorstep, leading to the resignation of all three KED members.
