Tread carefully

Talks aimed at the reunification of Cyprus have reached a critical point and the political leadership of Greece is making a mistake in appearing hesitant or even fearful of taking a position. That said, it should also not be overly forward, ignoring the risks involved in such a delicate negotiation. The United Nations-brokered reunification talks are the responsibility of the Cypriot and international authorities. Therefore, Athens’s job is to stand by Nicosia’s side and give it all of its support by respecting the red lines drawn by the Cypriot leadership. This is a period when the powers of Hellenism need to step up to the plate rather than become embroiled in new divisive issues that have cost everyone so much in the past.
