A group calling itself the “Squatters of Kouvelou Mansion” (in reference to an abandoned building under occupation by anarchists) yesterday claimed responsibility on an anti-establishment website for the attack on Golden Dawn lawmaker Giorgos Germenis in Maroussi, northern Athens, on Saturday. The group claimed that around 30 of its members came face-to-face with the far-right deputy outside a cafe while putting up posters in the neighborhood. Germenis, it said, “did not assess the difficult position in which he found himself and instead of accepting our invitation to leave preferred to continue provoking.” The announcement added that the group attacked the lawmaker when his companion, an off-duty police officer, reached for a gun. Germenis suffered minor injuries in the attack.
