Only a frac­tion of rape vic­tims take le­gal ac­tion

Around 5,000 rapes are re­ported in Greece ev­ery year but only around 150 of the vic­tims take le­gal ac­tion, ac­cord­ing to the Hel­lenic So­ci­ety of Foren­sic Medicine. A re­cent re­port in­di­cates that 24 per­cent of women have re­ported phys­i­cal abuse (18 per­cent by their part­ner) while 6 per­cent of women claim to have suf­fered sex­ual abuse (5 per­cent by their part­ner). In the 28-mem­ber Euro­pean Union an es­ti­mated 16.7 mil­lion women suf­fer phys­i­cal or sex­ual abuse ev­ery year.
