Artemis Sorras, the self-styled trillionaire who claims he can pay off Greece’s entire debt, was sentenced, along with his wife, to eight years in prison by a court in the western town of Patra yesterday. Neither Sorras nor his wife were present at the hearing, where judges rejected a request for postponement and also slapped the couple with a five-year suspension of civil rights. According to the couple’s lawyer, the embezzlement conviction pertains to them having sold a luxury car that did not rightfully belong to them to three different buyers – without ever handing the vehicle over. Sorras also failed to appear yesterday at the Athens Prosecutor’s Office to answer to a string of criminal charges, including racketeering and fraud in connection with the nationalist political organization he runs, called Convention of Greeks.
