All archaeological sites and most museums in Athens, including the Acropolis, will remain shut for most of this morning due to a strike by site guards demanding the payment of overtime and the recruitment of more staff. The three-hour work stoppage starting at 8 a.m. comes as the tourist season gets under way with authorities predicting another record-breaking year. The union representing protesting staff is demanding the payment of overtime for work on Sundays and national holidays, and the immediate hiring of 200 extra guards, which the union described boosting the smooth functioning and safety of archaeological sites and museums as a “national urgency.”
