Strong winds fan brush­fire out­side cap­i­tal

Vol­un­teers are seen bat­tling a blaze in the area of Anavys­sos, south­east of Athens, yes­ter­day, as fire­fight­ers strug­gled to con­tain the large brush­fire that be­gan in the Ka­lyvia area. Au­thor­i­ties said no res­i­den­tial ar­eas were un­der threat yes­ter­day even­ing. Some 70 fire­fight­ers were in­volved in the ef­fort, as­sisted by five drop­ping-wa­ter he­li­copters and 30 fire en­gines. Strong winds were ham­per­ing the ef­fort and fire­fight­ers were try­ing to bring it un­der con­trol be­fore dusk as wa­ter­drop­ping planes and he­li­copters do not op­er­ate at night.
