The Greek Orthodox Church in Jerusalem has denounced a ruling by an Israeli court that said a sale of prime church property in 2004 to companies that represent Jewish settlers who want to expand their presence in the Old City was conducted legally. Greek Orthodox Patriarch of Jerusalem Theophilos III insisted in an ad placed in the Al Quds newspaper yesterday that the deal was conducted illegally. The deal will also open the way for three structures in the Old City of Jerusalem – which is divided into four quarters, Armenian, Christian, Jewish and Musom, Islam and Judaism – to be leased for 99 years to a group associated with West Bank settlers.
