Remembering Nagasaki and Hiroshima
The atomic bombing of the Japanese cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki 72 years ago by American airplanes was marked at the foot of the Acropolis Hill in Athens yesterday. The gathering was attended by Greek trade union members and others. A similar commemoration was also held in Thessaloniki. The US dropped the nuclear weapons on August 6 and 9, 1945, during the final stages of World War II. The two bombings, which killed at least 129,000 people, remain the only use of nuclear weapons for warfare in history.
