The general secretary of the Education Ministry, Yiannis Pantis, died in Athens yesterday at the age of 60. He had been in an intensive care unit since he suffered a heart attack on May 18. A professor of ecology at Thessaloniki’s Aristotle University, Pantis assumed his post in September 2015 under then Education Minister Nikos Filis. Filis’s successor Costas Gavroglou spoke of a “difficult loss,” while Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras described Pantis as “an academic, a teacher, a fighter, who always strove to marry logic with sensitivity,” adding, “Nothing is lost from what he taught through his work, his life, his ethos and his struggles.”
