Athens marks 73rd an­niver­sary of lib­er­a­tion from Nazis

Mem­bers of the Greek Pres­i­den­tial Guard present arms on the Acrop­o­lis Hill yes­ter­day dur­ing a cer­e­mony mark­ing the 73rd an­niver­sary of the lib­er­a­tion of Athens from Nazi oc­cu­pa­tion dur­ing World War Two. In com­ments in front of the Parthenon, In­te­rior Min­is­ter Panos Sk­ourletis said that the cer­e­mony was be­ing held to ‘safe­guard the mem­ory of a great peo­ple who not only en­dured three-and-a-half years of painful oc­cu­pa­tion but emerged stronger and per­haps more in­no­cent de­spite the hard­ship of the times.’
