Lawyers ask for hearings to be speeded up
Ahead of the scheduled resumption of the long-running trial over the alleged criminal activity of the neo-Nazi party Golden Dawn tomorrow, the lawyers representing the plaintiffs have called for daily hearings to speed up the proceedings in case a new coronavirus outbreak in the fall leads to courts being closed again. In a letter to the Athens Appeals Court, the 10 lawyers expressed concern that the trial, which started over four years ago, may be extended indefinitely if there’s a new outbreak in the country in the coming months. They proposed that the trial continue through June, July and September, noting that GD defense attorneys are seeking to address the court again, which will cause additional delays. The court hearings could be completed in October if the plaintiffs’ request is adopted, their lawyers said. In any case, the Athens Appeals Court complex meets all the necessary safety measures for proceedings to continue over the coming months, when public attendance is expected to be low, they said.
