GVF selects training squad ahead of S/America Olympic qualifiers

- By Royston Alkins

The Guyana Volleyball Federation (GVF) after hosting an inter-association volleyball trials between Berbice and Demerara has shortlisted their male and female training squads for the South America Olympic Qualifiers May 26 to June 4 in Bolivia.

The players will commence preparations under the watchful eyes of national coach Levi Nedd who is keen to have his players in shape for the South American Games which Guyana has not attended in nearly three decades.

“A long time ago, I would have recalled, and that would have been in the late 80’s we would have gone to Columbia and Venezuela to participate in these trials,” Nedd said of the last time Guyana attended the trials.

Nedd said Guyana has had some success at the youth level with the same group of players who have now transitioned to the senior level.

“We have a very good team, but our training time clashes with work and based on how we can amalgamate how that can happen, that will depend on our success.

“But we have a very good team. A lot of these young players came through the youth teams and they were very good. They would have brought home the trophy from the Inter Guyana games.

“We went to Trinidad, we went Cayenne, and we were very successful there, and these are the same players. They have a lot of international exposure and it’s now up to us to have our preparations on target, and we should do well,” Nedd pointed out.

After the final squad is chosen, the team will journey to Bolivia to commence their road to the Olympics.
