Soes­dyke woman dies in Land of Canaan bus crash

A Soes­dyke woman was killed on Fri­day af­ter­noon, while sev­eral oth­ers were in­jured af­ter the un­li­censed driver of the minibus they were trav­el­ling in lost con­trol of the ve­hi­cle along the Land of Canaan Pub­lic Road, on the East Bank of De­mer­ara and col­lided with a util­ity pole.

Dead is 52-year-old Yvonne Mo­han, who was pro­nounced dead on ar­rival at the Di­a­mond Di­ag­nos­tic Cen­tre, where she and the other ac­ci­dent vic­tims, who in­cluded chil­dren, were taken, fol­low­ing the ac­ci­dent.

The in­jured have been iden­ti­fied as Anna Chung, a res­i­dent of Cover­den, Ser­ena Wil­son, 12, of Soes­dyke Hous­ing Scheme, Shelly Daby­deen, 13 of Kuru Kuru, Ra­jroop Per­saud, 61, of Pearl, Devon Sobers, 35 of Kuru Kuru and a 10year-old boy.

Two of the vic­tims, in­clud­ing Per­saud, were trans­ferred to the Ge­orge­town Pub­lic Hos­pi­tal, where they are be­ing treated.

The 24-year-old un­li­censed driver of the minibus, who is a res­i­dent of Sophia, was taken into cus­tody. The ac­ci­dent oc­curred around 5.45 pm on Fri­day.

The po­lice, in a press re­lease, said ini­tial in­ves­ti­ga­tions re­vealed that minibus BWW 4543 was pro­ceed­ing south along the East Bank Pub­lic Road, al­legedly at a fast rate, when the driver lost con­trol while ne­go­ti­at­ing a turn.

As a re­sult, the bus turned tur­tle and crashed into an elec­tri­cal pole.

Sun­day Stabroek was re­li­ably in­formed that the owner of the minibus is cur­rently in the in­te­rior.

This news­pa­per was also told that the minibus is nor­mally driven by an in­di­vid­ual to trans­port school chil­dren on a daily ba­sis. How­ever, on Fri­day af­ter­noon, the in­di­vid­ual did not turn up to pick up the school chil­dren and the un­li­censed driver vol­un­teered to com­plete his du­ties.

The driver in cus­tody is al­leged to have ini­tially claimed to be a mem­ber of the Guyana Po­lice Force.
