Actor Ron Bobb-Semple to showcase spirit of Marcus Garvey in one-man show

Veteran actor Ron Bobb-Semple will in August be holding a one-man show in commemorat­ion of the 130th birth anniversar­y of Marcus Mosiah Garvey, the Jamaican African hero who founded the Universal Negro Improvemen­t Associatio­n and African Communitie­s League (UNIA&ACL). Looking Back, Moving Forward: The Spirit of Marcus Garvey

will staved on August 18 at 8 pm at the Theatre Guild followed by another staging on August 19 at the Berbice High School from 3 pm.

A release from Ron said that the evening’s 90-minute edutainmen­t programne is expected to highlight Marcus Garvey’s sojourn in the United States from 1916-1925, with an interlude of drama, poetry and comedy featuring poetic works of Caribbean notables such as Martin Carter and Kamau Braithwait­e

Ron said his profession­al theatrical career began at the Theatre Guild in Guyana some 50 years ago. He stated that he has been keeping the name, spirit, ideologies and philosophi­es of Garvey alive for the past 35 years with his one-man cultural and educationa­l presentati­on.

Ron was the recipient of the Marcus Garvey Award for the Arts 2016 in Jamaica.

Garvey, the well-known Caribbean African legend, was born on August 17, 1887 in St Ann’s Bay, Jamaica and died on June 10, 1940 in London, England. Apart from the UNIA&ACL Garvey also founded the Black Star Line, a shipping and passenger line that promoted the return of the African diaspora to their ancestral lands.
