Tuschen suspect in theft of two cars recaptured

After managing to evade the police for almost two months, Leon Alister who had escaped from lawful custody while being questioned in relation to the theft of two motorcars was around midnight on Thursday recaptured by the police at a roadblock at West Bank Demerara. In a press release yesterday, Public Relations Officer of the Guyana Police Force, Jairam Ramlakhan confirmed that Alister was apprehende­d at a roadblock in the vicinity of the Demerara Harbour Bridge.

Alister escaped from the Leonora Police Station during October. “The suspect, who while in custody at the Leonora Police Station in the month of October, and due to the criminal negligence of a rank, had escaped from custody, was recaptured”, the statement said.

On October 26, the police had issued a wanted bulletin for Alister, whose last known address is Lot 2494 Tuschen Housing Scheme, East Bank Essequibo.

He was wanted for questionin­g in relation to escaping from lawful custody and simple larceny.

While details surroundin­g the incident are unclear, Stabroek News was told that Alister was taken into custody on October 7 after he allegedly stole two motor cars belonging to Alwin Lewis.

A report was made to the police and Alister was arrested and taken into custody at the Leonora Police Station for questionin­g during which he subsequent­ly escaped.
