Brothers United secures playoff round spot

Brothers United secured the final berth in the playoff round of the Guinness ‘Greatest of the Streets’ West Demerara/East Bank Demerara zone, defeating Young Stars 2-0 in the final yesterday.

Played at the Pouderoyen Tarmac, Adami Hoyte was the difference in the clash as he recorded a ‘Guinness Goal’ [any goal scored in the final three minutes of a match will be counted as two goals] in the 18th minute.

Brothers United had earned their place in the final after securing a bye via a random draw at the end of the second round while Young Stars crushed Top Strikers 4-0 in the lone semi-final.

According to tournament co-coordinator Travis Bess, “The playoffs were very competitive, with a very high standard of play. I expect because of the quality on show, the tournament will be of a high quality.”

He added, “There will be no favour given to any team from the respective opponents. This morning tells the story that everyone is hunting for the title. Everyone looking to dethrone two time champion Showstoppers.”

Meanwhile, in the earlier second round of matches, Brothers United needled Samaroo Dam 1-0 on penalty kicks after regulation time saw the match ending 0-0 while Young Stars downed Genocide Youths 2-0.

In the opening round of the playoffs, Brothers United defeated Future Crane 2-0 via a 8th minute ‘Guinness

Goal’ from Leon Yaw. Also, Young Stars defeated Spaniards via walkover.

Similarly, Topp Striker defeated Lot-20 and Genocide Youths defeated Stewartville via respective walkovers. Samaroo Dam downed Gully Side 2-1 on penalty kicks, after normal time ended scoreless.

The main tournament which starts on Friday, features 32 teams competing in an initial group stage format.

Upon the conclusion of the group round, the top two finishers will advance to the knockout round in the seven day tournament.

The Pouderoyen Tarmac will serve as the venue for the entirety of the championship. The other playing dates are January 31st, February 2nd, 7th, 9th, 13th and 17th.

Winner of the tournament will pocket $400,000 and the championship trophy.

On the other hand, the runner-up will receive $200,000 and the corresponding accolade.

The third placed finisher will receive $150,000 and a trophy, whilst the fourth placed unit will walk away with $100,000 and a trophy.
