Ac­com­plice in botched ECD rob­bery re­manded

A 23- yearold con­vict who was im­pli­cated in a botched rob­bery on the Lilien­daal Pub­lic Road, Rail­way Em­bank­ment, East Coast De­mer­ara on Au­gust 29 2017 was on Mon­day ar­raigned at t he Sparen­daam Mag­is­trates’ Court.

Mark Grif­fith of 31 Sheet An­chor, Canje, Ber­bice ap­peared be­fore Mag­is­trate Seep­aul-Ally and was not re­quired to the plead to the in­dictable charge which stated that on the day in ques­tion, he at­tempted to rob a busi­ness­woman at the said lo­ca­tion.

The court also heard that ear­lier this year, Grif­fith was sen­tenced to two years in ab­sten­tia for armed rob­bery by a Ber­bice Mag­is­trate.

He was re­manded un­til Oc­to­ber 04 2017.

On the day in ques­tion, Grif­fith and his 24-year-old ac­com­plice, Try­don Mun- roe at­tempted to carry out a brazen rob­bery on a 42-yearold in­te­rior flight ser­vices su­per­vi­sor and her se­cu­rity es­cort (body­guard), who had trav­elled to the Eugene F. Cor­reia In­ter­na­tional Air­port to up­lift a pack­age con­tain­ing valu­ables.

Re­ports in­di­cated that the woman was cor­nered along the Lilien­daal Rail­way Em­bank­ment Road in the vicin­ity of the Gift­land Mall junc­tion when a dark coloured ve­hi­cle drove into her path, block­ing her.

Two men then ex­ited that ve­hi­cle bear­ing weapons, and pounced on the busi­ness­woman, be­ing un­aware that her armed es­cort was seated in the ve­hi­cle.

Dis­missed Prison Of­fi­cer Try­don Munroe of Levi Dam, An­goys Av­enue, New Am­s­ter­dam was shot and killed by the busi­ness­woman’s body­guard dur­ing the rob­bery at­tack, while his ac­com­plice –Grif­fith- es­caped with gun­shot wounds, but later sur­faced at a city hos­pi­tal.

Munroe’s life­less body was found by de­tec­tives near a .32 pis­tol with three live match­ing rounds. He al­legedly had been dis­missed from the Guyana Prison Ser­vice af­ter sev­eral breaches of the rules and reg­u­la­tions of that en­tity.
