San Pedro Sula (la capital industrial de Honduras) conserva el antiguo sistema español de organización y está dividida en cuatro cuadrantes: noroeste, noreste, suroeste y sureste. SPS posee una orientación empresarial e industrial desde tiempos antiguos; en donde aún antes del descubrimiento, comerciantes indígenas de Yucatán y el Caribe solían acudir al Valle de Sula para adquirir bienes como cacao, plumas de quetzal y cerámica. La construcción de su actual riqueza inició finales del siglo XIX y principios del XX, con la llegada de las transnacionales bananeras. Con ellas llegaron oleadas sucesivas de norteamericanos, libaneses, sirios (la mayoría viajaba con pasaporte turco), ingleses, alemanes e italianos. En las primeras décadas del siglo XX, la ciudad había crecido a ritmo vertiginoso con sus nuevas fábricas y el apoyo del ferrocarril. Al estar ubicada en el Valle de Sula, uno de los valles más fértiles de Honduras, la actividad agrícola y la ganadera han sido primordiales para su fortaleza económica. Otra de las múltiples ventajas que la ciudad goza es el hecho de estar a solo 55 kms de Puerto Cortés, el principal puerto marítimo de Honduras y Centroamérica. Siendo esto vital en el desarrollo de la industria maquilera. Poblaciones como Choloma, Villanueva o El Progreso se han sumado a la ciudad para crear un macrocinturón industrial y comercial. Convirtiéndose en el eje económico más importante de toda Honduras. También se encuentran muy cerca los principales destinos turísticos del occidente y el litoral atlántico del país.
