5. Pierogi

Like a Pol­ish ver­sion of pel­meni, pierogi (also known as varenyky) have thicker skins and ei­ther sweet or savoury fill­ings. Un­like pel­meni, pierogi fill­ings are usu­ally cooked be­fore be­ing en­closed in un­leav­ened dough, then boiled or pan-fried. Pop­u­lar fill­ings in­clude onion, potato and beef. Pierogi are of­ten served with a top­ping of melted but­ter, sour cream and fried onions.
