Celebrating its film debut in blockbuster Alien: Covenant
Director Ridley Scott integrated Audi’s lunar Quattro into his latest sci-fi blockbuster “Alien: Covenant”. The movie premiered worldwide in May and Audi lunar Quattro may soon embark on actual space missions after its movie debut.
Incorporating the Audi lunar Quattro into the film was the best way to garner attention to the moon rover developed by Audi. “Fox’s partnership with Audi on ‘Alien: Covenant’ is an opportunity to bring to the forefront the innovative work Audi is doing in exploration,” said Zachary Eller, Senior Vice President Marketing Partnerships at Twentieth Century Fox. “We’re happy to continue our long relationship with Audi that has allowed our filmmakers to incorporate authentic, leading-edge technology into their futuristic worlds.”
Currently, the Audi lunar Quattro is still underway to head for actual missions to the Moon. Since 2015, the premium manufacturer from Ingolstadt has worked with a team led by Robert Böhme, founder and CEO of “Part-time Scientist”, on developing the rover. Audi experts also supported the Berlin-based startup by bringing in Audi’s all wheel drive expertise (Quattro technology), lightweight construction expertise and the experience to develop vehicles with electric and plug-in hybrid motors (e-tron).
With the selection of best materials, developers are able to reduce the weight of the exploration vehicle to just 30kg. The Audi lunar Quattro is made up of 85 percent aluminium, produced by the 3D metal printer at Audi’s headquarters in Ingolstadt. A pivoting solar panel supplies the rover with energy and on top of that, there is the intelligent quattro drive technology and efficient e-tron motor.
