#Legend - - AUTUMN / WINTER 2017 -

AS A BRAND THAT HAS ABJURED DIVIDING ITS MEN’S AND WOMEN’S COLLECTIONS SINCE 2015, VETEMENTS WAS A SHOO-IN FOR THIS LIST. ITS DESIGN ETHOS TRANSCENDS THE LIMITATIONS OF GENDER AND, THIS TIME, IT DELVED INTO THE ISSUE OF STEREOTYPES AND PRECONCEPTIONS. DEMNA GVASALIA CAME UP WITH HYPER-FASHIONED STEREOTYPES OF LEATHER-CLAD PUNKS WITH SPIKY MOHAWKS, OLD LADIES IN PUFFA COATS, NINE-TO-FIVE OFFICE WORKERS IN CONFORMING SUITS AND SKINHEADS IN TRACKSUITS, AMONG OTHERS. HE TOOK CLOTHES THAT ARE PRESUMABLY ALREADY IN THE WARDROBES OF EACH STEREOTYPE AND TRANSFORMED THEM INTO ITEMS OF DESIRE BY GIVING THEM THE VETEMENTS TREATMENT: SPLITTING AND FUSING GARMENTS AT THE SEAMS, DISTORTING THE PROPORTIONS, OR HACKING AWAY AT THE SILHOUETTE TO MAKE THE FAMILIAR SEEM NEW.
