Tatler Dining Guide - Hong Kong
New Punjab Club
HK$800 per person
Assessed on food alone, New Punjab
Club excels, authentically capturing the cuisine of the region of Punjab and at times elevating classics, such as the gosht salan; here, it’s made with tender, slideoff-the-bone lamb shank. Elsewhere, traditional favourites are presented with a twist—take the deconstructed samosa, where a balanced sweet-spicy chaat surrounds the sliced-up pastry, or the keema pau, where minced mutton in a luscious gravy is served with soft, light milk buns and crisp potatoes in textural perfection. It’s a grill house, so meat takes centre stage, but every dish delivers deep flavours and layers, and often with a beautiful kick of spice that teeters on the edge of too much but keeps you coming back for more as you mop up every last drop with the fluffiest of naans. The setting is refined, yet with a contemporary swagger, as guests are ensconced deep in leather seats, surrounded by vibrant contemporary South Asian art and served gin-based cocktails from a well-stocked roving trolley. Service is playful and personable, but also polished and informed. Not only do staff display a deep knowledge of the menu, but also in most cases a genuine passion for the delectable dishes on offer at this distinctive restaurant.
