TN govt. to develop residential township says J Jayalalithaa

Tamil Nadu chief minister J Jayalalithaa announced that a self-supporting residential township will be developed at Kadambur near Maraimalai Nagar on the outskirts of Chennai.

“Considering the increase in demand for residential plots , the government decided to convert the 222 acre land in Kadambur into a residential township,” she said in the assembly. A surge in industrial activities and a raft of housing projects have made Maraimalai Nagar a hot realty space beyond the Chennai suburbs.

The city and its surrounding areas are today hailed as ‘New Chennai’. In the Kadambur Township, the plots would be allotted for low-income group category, middle-income group category and high-income group category. People belonging to weaker sections of the society would also be allotted houses.

A 58- acre lake in Kadambur village would be maintained as a water body and recreation facilities would be created. Thus the environment in and around the township will be stabilized. Kadambur is located nearly 50 km from Chennai city.

“Kadambur Township has been created to arrest migration to Chennai,” said a CMDA official.

The AIADMK government put the satellite township project on the fast track last year. A few decades ago, the government acquired 1,914 acres of land for the development of the industrial suburb of Maraimalai Nagar.

Today, the area boasts factories of several global car manufacturers as well as offices of software companies. Last year, an undeveloped area, around 250 acres, was earmarked for malls, star hotels, schools, hospitals and multiplexes.
