Plat Africa 2016, an annual jewellery design competition, recently announced its 25 finalists and three winners, who presented outstanding pieces crafted with the rare platinum metal, commingled with alternative material to create modern African narratives rooted in regional customs. The theme, Nuevo Traditions, threw up many challenges for its participants – right from choosing rituals, norms and mores and cultural stories to reinterpreting them in wearable forms of jewellery bearing urban aesthetics in mind. Each piece accompanied an essay by the participant describing the thought process behind the execution of the idea and the technicalities to bring the piece alive.

Presented by the world’s leading mining conglomerate, Anglo American Platinum, in association with Metal Concentrators, the esteemed competition was open to students, apprentice and professional jewellers in Africa. The Platinum Guild International – India offered a chance to the winners to participate in the design sourcing process.
