Two di­a­monds, a 50.39-carat oval di­a­mond (lot 350, es­ti­mate $7.3 mil­lion – $8 mil­lion) that sold for $8.12 mil­lion, and a 51.71-carat round bril­liant-cut di­a­mond (lot 373, es­ti­mate $8.2 mil­lion – $9.5 mil­lion) which went for $9.25 mil­lion, are D colour, have aw­less clar­ity and be­long to the highly rare ed ‘Type IIa’ group, made up of just 2% of gem di­a­monds with the high­est op­ti­cal trans­parency. Dis­cov­ered and pur­chased at ten­der in Botswana, both stones are per­fect ac­cord­ing to all the crit­i­cal cri­te­ria against which the world’s great­est di­a­monds are mea­sured.
