OVERVIEW OF INDIAN HIGHWAYS
Highways Sector is very critical for emerging economies like India due to existing infrastructure gaps and enhanced transportation requirements. A completed highway project has a multiplier effect on the economy. A. World’s second largest road network -- 4.87 million km. B. 97.135 kms of National Highways. C. National Highways are 2 per cent but carry 40 per cent of the traffic, 65 per cent of freight & and 80 per cent passenger traffic carried by roads E. Major programmes currently underway: 54,478 km under National Highways Development Programme, 101, 41 km under Special programme for North East (SARDP-NE), 5,477 km under Left wing & extremism affected areas (LWE) F. Implementation Authorities NHAI, state PWDS etc., BRO, newly formed NHIDCL for projects in border and other strategic locations; highway length awarded in 2014-15 is 7,980 km while highway length completed in 2014-15 is 4, 410 km.
