High­ways Sec­tor is very crit­i­cal for emerg­ing economies like In­dia due to ex­ist­ing in­fra­struc­ture gaps and en­hanced trans­porta­tion re­quire­ments. A com­pleted high­way project has a mul­ti­plier ef­fect on the econ­omy. A. World’s sec­ond largest road net­work -- 4.87 mil­lion km. B. 97.135 kms of Na­tional High­ways. C. Na­tional High­ways are 2 per cent but carry 40 per cent of the traf­fic, 65 per cent of freight & and 80 per cent pas­sen­ger traf­fic car­ried by roads E. Ma­jor pro­grammes cur­rently un­der­way: 54,478 km un­der Na­tional High­ways De­vel­op­ment Pro­gramme, 101, 41 km un­der Spe­cial pro­gramme for North East (SARDP-NE), 5,477 km un­der Left wing & ex­trem­ism af­fected ar­eas (LWE) F. Im­ple­men­ta­tion Au­thor­i­ties NHAI, state PWDS etc., BRO, newly formed NHIDCL for projects in border and other strate­gic lo­ca­tions; high­way length awarded in 2014-15 is 7,980 km while high­way length com­pleted in 2014-15 is 4, 410 km.
