To meet the growing demand caused by exponential growth of vehicles and satisfy the people’s aspirations of high quality and high speed roads, the expansion of national highway (NH) network to connect all district headquarters in the country was considered necessary. Accordingly, about 11,800 km of state roads have been declared as NHS under district connectivity and some roads under strategic importance. Out of these roads, 6,200 km are already covered under various programmes and DPR of about 2,200 km of NHS is under preparation in Indian Academy of Highway Engineers (IAHE). DPR of balance length will be taken up in year 2015-16.
