To meet the grow­ing de­mand caused by ex­po­nen­tial growth of ve­hi­cles and sat­isfy the peo­ple’s as­pi­ra­tions of high qual­ity and high speed roads, the ex­pan­sion of na­tional high­way (NH) net­work to con­nect all dis­trict head­quar­ters in the coun­try was con­sid­ered nec­es­sary. Ac­cord­ingly, about 11,800 km of state roads have been de­clared as NHS un­der dis­trict con­nec­tiv­ity and some roads un­der strate­gic im­por­tance. Out of th­ese roads, 6,200 km are al­ready cov­ered un­der var­i­ous pro­grammes and DPR of about 2,200 km of NHS is un­der prepa­ra­tion in In­dian Acad­emy of High­way En­gi­neers (IAHE). DPR of bal­ance length will be taken up in year 2015-16.
