Guwa­hati Air­port: Gate­way to North-east In­dia


Guwa­hati air­port, which is also re­ferred to as Lokpriya Gopinath Bor­doloi In­ter­na­tional Air­port (LGBI) is lo­cated at Bor­jhar, around 29 km from the city of Guwa­hati, As­sam. It was ear­lier known as Bor­jhar Air­port. Named af­ter Gopinath Bor­doloi, who was a free­dom fighter & the first Chief Min­is­ter of As­sam af­ter in­de­pen­dence, it is the main in­ter­na­tional air­port of North-east­ern states of In­dia.

The air­port cov­ers an area of 655 acres. Man­aged and op­er­ated by the Air­ports Au­thor­ity of In­dia, Guwa­hati air­port is the ma­jor hub for flights to North-east­ern states of In­dia, with a ca­pac­ity of han­dling more than 25 lakh pas­sen­gers per year. The air­port also cur­rently serves as a base for the In­dian Air Force. The Guwa­hati air­port pro­vides mul­ti­ple flights to ma­jor cities of In­dia. Do­mes­tic flights from Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, Ban­ga­lore and sev­eral other cities of the country con­nect to Guwa­hati air­port.


Guwa­hati air­port is the ma­jor gate­way to the north-east­ern re­gion of In­dia. It pro­vides an easy ac­cess to most of the tourist desti­na­tions lo­cated in north-east In­dia. The city of Guwa­hati is the com­mer­cial nerve cen­tre of North-east In­dia and is well-con­nected to all ma­jor and pop­u­lar cities in In­dia through air­ways. Do­mes­tic flights to Guwa­hati are avail­able from al­most all ma­jor cities in In­dia which in­cludes New Delhi, Mumbai, Chen­nai, Kolkata, Ban­galuru, Ahmedabad, Jaipur, Goa, Bag­do­gra, Di­bru­garh, Jorhat and all cap­i­tal of North east ex­cept Sikkim. Guwa­hati is also hav­ing in­ter­na­tional flight to Bangkok and paro.


The ter­mi­nal build­ing at the air­port has the ca­pac­ity of han­dling 1500 pas­sen­gers at peak hour. Guwa­hati Air­port has two aer­o­bridges, 24 check-in coun­ters, 2 VIP and one CIP lounge in the ter­mi­nal build­ing.
