DONER Day Celebration in Shillong, Meghalaya
The Ministry of Development of North East Region organized a one-day event “DONER Day Celebration 2016” this year at Polo Ground, Shillong – Meghalaya. The theme of the exhibition was ‘Mera Desh Badalraha Hai, Aage Badh Raha Hai’. This event was preceded by the 65th Plenary Session of the North East Council at another venue in Shillong, in which Ministry of Civil Aviation was represented by the RED, NER, AAI.
The event was inaugurated by Sh. Narendra Modi, Hon’ble Prime Minister of India followed by a Public Rally. The venue of walk through Exhibition was shifted from Polo Ground to the Jawahar Lal Nehru Indoor Sports Complex, near Polo Ground due to the Prime Minister’s Rally at Polo Ground. Directorate of Advertizing and Visual Publicity(davp), Govt. of India was the organizing agency. The Prime Minister landed on the ALG of Eastern Air Command, Shillong.
AAI was invited to participate on behalf of Ministry of Civil Aviation. A threemember multidisciplinary team was deputed from AAI, CHQ for the exhibition. The exhibits were the corporate movie of AAI, a digital walk through of Pakyong Airport, and various panels, standees and scroller showing the role of AAI in the Civil Aviation of India with special reference to the airport services and development in North East Region. The response to the AAI stall was appreciable. The AAI team members replied to the queries raised by the visitors. The salient points raised by the visitors was as follows: ➢ Extension of runway at Shillong for operation of Bigger aircrafts like A320. ➢ Demand for more international connectivity from the two Airports in NER – Guwahati and Imphal. ➢ Demand for more flights at Agartala
and Imphal. ➢ The visitors of Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim raised the demand for building airports in their states. AAI team apprised them about the upcoming Greenfield airport at Pakyong, Sikkim and the development of Tezu Airport, Arunachal Pradesh and proposed greenfield airport at Holongi near Itanagar, Arunachal Pradesh. ➢ Due to the immense potential for trade of natural produce of the region like ginger, pineapple, orchids other medicinal herbs etc, there is a demand for setting up Centre for Perishable Cargo at major airports of NER like Guwahati, Imphal and Agartala. ➢ There was a demand for more flights at the underserved airports of NER.
