Gone are the days when winter fashion was synonymous with the terms drab and dull. As the degrees dip this season, the winter style quotient in India is heightening and how! Shilpa Chatterjee gives you the lowdown on some hot winter trends that you can fl
If you never gave a thought about merging your winter wardrobe with your party it-list, then now is the time to do so! The Indian winter fashion scene ushers in a myriad of interesting fall trends this season that will not only leave you feeling comfortably snug during the day but you can also hit the town at night in these winter specials. And crochet is definitely ruling the roost here!
Crochet is huge this winter. From dresses and tops to cardigans, jackets, skirts and caps—crochet is bringing the ‘70s back in a big way this season and the addition of peplum silhouettes and ruffles help add character to the plainness of the fabric. “Crochet is an evergreen trend and now that winter has set in, crochet is back on the fashion circuit. Known as grandma wear before, today, style experts and designers all across the world are letting crochet gain centre stage in their winter collections to add that feminine touch to the winter look,” says Naushina Shaikh, Mumbaibased fashion designer, stylist and blogger. The reason crochet can alternate as winter and party trend is because, “crochet can be incorporated in any design, style or apparel. It can be used in one’s bridal trousseau in
dupattas, lace trimmings etc. It can be used as western casuals in the form of jackets, boleros, dresses, shorts, etc. It can also be used as accessories through bags, shoes, caps, mufflers, jewellery, etc. And it can be worn by all age groups,” adds Naushina. So when you are planning to hit the party circuit, add sophistication to your outfit in the form of crochet dresses, or slim-fitting crochet skirts. While subtle colours are great formal wear options, brighter hues are an excellent choice for parties and night outs. The sheerness of crochet dresses can be cut down with knit structures worn beneath (in various colours), which not only keep one warm, but also announce one’s style statement as – bold and sexy, yet elegant and feminine at the same time! And with crochet, it is a win-win situation for retailers and garment manufacturers as well. “Crochet is an expensive fabric and a lot of skill and time is invested to manufacture one such item. Hence, by stocking crochet apparel this party season, retailers will have a lot to cheer about as consumers are willing to pay any amount of price to make this fashion trend a part of their wardrobe,” explains Naushina.
KNITTING UP A STORM!
No longer considered as a ‘comfortably boring’ option, nor restricted to neutral, plain or stripes—knitwear is now truly ruling runways. Chunky sweaters/pullovers styled fabulously with trousers, denims, shorts, skirts or leggings; sexy knit dresses complemented with great accessories like belts, stoles, jackets, over-coats, etc. are sure to spruce up your glam quotient, while at the same time provide the right amount of warmth.
Coats make for the ultimate party outerwear and who says winter coats can’t be stylish? Large coats in bright hues add a dash of colour to a neutralcoloured outfit. Strong-shouldered
coats, boyfriend coats, sleeveless vest-like and biker coats—all emanate class and style. Bold blazers worn with deep-coloured denims, boxy jackets given a flattering fit with a belt, and denim jackets with faux fur trimmings—are definite winter party must-haves!
ROLLING UP IN STYLE!
Turtlenecks/roll necks are timeless— none of the unnecessary bulk and all warmth. Thin-knit, cotton or silk roll necks worn under heavy coats ooze class. Turtlenecks also make for a great style statement as one-piece dresses, and as tops teamed smartly with jeans, skirts, or trousers.
WRAPPING IT UP!
Scarves or stoles can be your best friends throughout the year but more so on a windy day! Tie them classily in a number of stylish ways to add that playful zing to your party outfit. From plain to floral to animal printed scarves and stoles in warm fabrics— you are surely spoiled for choice this season. Shradha Murarka, Creative Director, Vizyon, says, “Winter wear can be very exciting and one can easily dress up or dress down during this season with printed scarves, by layering them onto dresses or formal wear.” Heena Malhotra, Designer, Chhabra 555, adds, “Wrapping yourself in warmth without losing your style is the season’s rage.
