Dear Friends,

Apparel - - From the President's Desk - RAHUL MEHTA

As I write this piece, I am sitting in the Annual Pune Convention of the CMAI Western Region, listening to some excellent presentations on GST in one session, and Maratha History in the other! This is a unique event held by the Pune Chapter once a year, where nearly 65 to 70 members gather to learn, to share, and speak about their businesses. I particularly love their format, which always includes one session on a totally non-Industry related topic. Sometimes, it is on Public Speaking, sometimes on Yoga, and, at other times, on Literature or Humour. It is a great escape from boring speeches on topics we actually want to get away from! However, what thrilled me this time was a brief presentation by our Solapur members – talking about their recent Exhibition focused on Uniforms, which was visited by over 3000 buyers! They also shared their plans of encouraging Exports of Home Furnishings, Uniforms, Bed sheets, etc. They are planning a delegation to participate in a Buyer Seller meet in Kenya this year! Wow! This is what I see as aiming high, in complete disregard to what the rest of the world sees as limitations and constraints! Well done! On another subject, the preparatory work on GST appears to be coming to a close, and all aspects other than the Rate allocation should be completed by this month end. As I have shared earlier, CMAI is pressing hard for a Uniform, seamless GST at the lowest possible slab. Hopefully, we shall succeed! The SS17 season seems to have started off on a positive note, and finally, it looks as if the Industry is realising the folly of long and extended Discount Sales. Most Brands and Retailers seem to have launched their new collections by mid February, and the results are evident in terms of Sales! With every passing month, I can say more confidently that the demonetisation demons have more or less passed. Every month appears to be better than the previous. Keep the fingers crossed!
