FREE TRADE AGREEMENT WITH SRI LANKA
The Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India requested the Association for its views on Sri Lanka’s Request for Removing the Quota or Increasing TRQ from the existing Eight Million Pieces under the Bilateral Trade Agreement with Sri Lanka. The Association has sent its View to the Ministry of Textiles, Govt of India, which are as under: 1. The Domestic Apparel Industry is going through a sluggish phase post Demonetisation and the Introduction of GST and increasing in TRQ would dampen the spirits of the SME Manufacturers. It would also contradict the ‘Make in India’ Story of our Hon’ble Prime Minister, Shri Narendra Modi. Hence, we would not recommend and increase in the TRQ at the present moment. 2. However, in case the Government of India decides to increase the TRQ for Sri Lanka, we strongly feel that the Increase should only be token in nature and up to Two Million Pieces (from Eight Million Pieces to Ten Million Pieces) and not more than Three Million Pieces in One Category. 3. We strongly urge the Government to also include the ‘Fabric Forward’ Policy in the FTA with Sri Lanka.
