Dear Member,

Assocham Bulletin - - ECONOMY -

On behalf of ASSOCHAM, I wish all our members & readers a very happy festive season. The mood must be upbeat and let me speak with lot more positivity. Apart from our usual festivals of Navratra, Diwali, Onam etc, the country is also enjoying the season by celebrating Swachh Bharat Abhiyan and FIFA U17 Football world cup, being played in India.

The problem of air pollution has been gaining national interest over the years, therefore policy makers are deeply concerned with the odouos and smoke that is badly impacting the health condition of one and all. There is an urgent need to reduce air pollution and improve ambient air quality through voluntary actions by individuals and organisations.

In this context, ASSOCHAM in collaboration with Reckitt Benckiser (RB) led, 'Dettol Banega Swachh India' campaign launched an' Awareness Program on Air Pollution' in Punjab on Monday, 2nd October, 2017. The objective of this program was to promote awareness and practice through behavioral change, communication activities by involving Panchayats, Corp orates, MSMEs, NGOs, Educational Institute, Hospitals and other stakeholders. We are proud to be a part of CLEANATHON 2017 organised by NDTV on 2nd Oct, 2017 at Mumbai, in presence of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan and to share our views on air pollution.

This is the first time an Indian team is participating in a FIFA World Cup and the tournament has been widely proclaimed as a massive opportunity to begin the process of bringing Indian football back to its former glory. It was a proud moment for ASSOCHAM to felicitate the U17 Indian Football team in presence of Mr. Rajyawardhan Rathore, Hon'ble Minister of State (ljC) for Youth Affairs & Sports, Government of India. We wish our team all the best for this important tournament & hope they do well to make every Indian proud.

As far as Indian economy is concerned, we had interacted with Hon'ble President of India, PMO & Finance Ministry during this month and they shared their concern over depleting economic growth of the country. On their behest, ASSOCHAM shared their views on short term & long term measures for bringing back the economy on the growth path and also shared voice of industry regarding GST issues.

Surprisingly, RBI has kept its policy rates unchanged in recently announced monetary policy. The industry was expecting that RBI should cut the policy interest to boost the growth as the inflation level is still well within control. RBI is always faced with the dilemma of choosing between growth and inflation, but the overall national sentiment at this point of time, is for reviving growth and employment as the trade and industrial activity, particularly in the informal sector is facing some issues from GST. The window of easing interest rates was very much open, which should have been used.

ASSOCHAM also organised some other important events during Sep-Oct, 2017 including Gold Summit, Insurance Summit, Housing for All Summit etc. and the response was tremendous with regards to presence of guests & delegates.

I wish you all a very happy festive season once again.
