Mahindra Electric, part of the Mahindra Group, has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Auroville, an experimental township in Pondicherry, to pilot India’s first integrated sustainable mobility ecosystem for a community. This unique ecosystem will be an extension to Auroville’s several e-mobility initiatives over the last few decades. The project will coexist with the existing ecosystem and encourage lifestyle choices in quiet mobility, optimal sharing of resources and reduced carbon footprint, hop-on-hopoff shuttles and smart parking.

Under the MoU the 2 parties will work with IISc (Indian Institute of Science), Puducherry Smart City Development Limited, GoGreen BOV, and numerous initiatives at Auroville itself to develop a holistic ecosystem encompassing Mahindra’s electric vehicles, smart parking systems, charging infrastructure and its software integration platform NEMO.

As a cloud-enabled mobility platform, NEMO provides information about battery and vehicle performance. It will also address individual requirements of varied segments of urban mobility including car-hiring, ride-sharing and corporate commuting. Mahesh Babu, CEO, Mahindra Electric said “we at Mahindra are happy to join hands with Auroville, IISc and other partners for India’s first initiative to develop an integrated sustainable mobility ecosystem for a community. Mahindra has been working for close to a decade to develop the electric eco-system in India. The evolution of a common platform integrating mobility, energy storage and charging for an entire community is an important step to ensure quick scalability in future. There is great synergy between Auroville’s vision to create a green mobility system and our initiatives to help more people adopt EV technology. We are confident that Mahindra Electric’s NEMO, will prove to be the most suitable platform to develop a sustainable mobility ecosystem for any community.”

“Our endeavour has been to make these electric mobility solutions work for the society and we chose to work with Auroville as it has been a pioneer in embracing sustainable solutions. We want to do a lot of pilots and only through such pilots we can learn, optimise and create value for the community. Once we are successful here, this can be a role model for other cities,” he said.

Mahindra Electric also unveiled its energy storage solution which will play a key role in enabling the ecosystem including charging infrastructure. It also aims to enable mobility models like ride sharing, ride hailing, selfdrive rentals etc. The Town Planner, PSCDL, supported by the French Government, will also play a key role in this initiative. The pilot project team expects 100-500 people to use daily Mahindra’s electric vehicles and other services for their mobility needs. Mahindra Group has diversified portfolios of electric vehicles with the e2oPlus hatch, eVerito sedan, eSupro minivan and panel vans and its electric rickshaw, e-Alfa Mini.

Mahindra Electric also unveiled its energy storage solution which will play a key role in enabling the ecosystem including charging infrastructure, EV parking, and an EV Support Centre. It will also help harness renewable power, thus becoming an end-to-end green solution.

“After 2 decades of experimenting with-mobility solutions for public and private transport for the community, Auroville believes that the innovation in technology and support from partners such as Mahindra Electric, IISC and Go Green will enable Auroville to start prototyping end-to-end sustainable mobility solutions which can then be replicated across other cities,” Minhaj Ameen, Coordinator, Integrated Transport Services, Auroville, said.
