The AMT gear­boxes in the car still have a long way to go in terms of re­fine­ment and driv­ing ex­pe­ri­ence. We have al­ready seen that Maruti’s AGS per­forms well with the Ig­nis petrol but our ex­pe­ri­ence with the AGS on the Dzire diesel hasn’t been great. We drove the diesel Swift AMT. Though the over­all ex­pe­ri­ence is still be­low ex­pec­ta­tions, it’s bet­ter than the Dzire. The creep func­tion that was miss­ing on the Dzire works well on the Swift though the time taken for each of the shifts needs to be im­proved. How­ever, the AGS is an af­ford­able op­tion to tackle city traf­fic. pock­ets have space to hold 1-litre wa­ter bot­tles while the rear doors can fit only 500ml bot­tles. There is no cooled glove com­part­ment though to keep th­ese bot­tles cool and there are no air con vents at the rear ei­ther to keep the rear pas­sen­gers cool. The Swift comes with a choice of two en­gines, a 1.2-litre petrol and a 1.3-litre diesel as well as a choice of two gear­boxes, a five-speed man­ual and a 5-speed au­to­mated man­ual trans­mis­sion that Maruti likes to call AGS.
