Auto Today - - Update! -

THE 40TH edition of the Dakar rally has come to close in Argentina, with French driver Carlos Sainz at the top of the tables in the cars classification. Driving for Team Peugeot Total in a 3008DKR Maxi Buggy, this is Sainz’s second Dakar win. Peugeot had announced that they would retire from Dakar participation after this year’s event, so the victory comes as a bittersweet farewell from the world’s most gruelling motorsport event. Sainz finished 43 minutes ahead of second-placed Nasser Al-Attiyah (Toyota Gazoo Racing). Stephane Peterhansel, popularly known as Mr Dakar for 14 Dakar victories in various categories, finished in fourth place in the cars category, after suffering a crash in the seventh stage. In the bikes category, Matthias Walkner (Red Bull KTM) finished in first, almost 17 minutes ahead of Kevin Benavides. This is the first time an Austrian rider is piloting an Austrian machine to first place in the Dakar.
