Getting motive force from the engine requires the fuel to be burned to produce energy. This energy in various forms — heat, linear thrust and rotational force — is what gets the gears turning and wheels spinning. The process of igniting the mixture of fuel and air in the engine cylinders by delivering a spark at the appropriate time is the main function of the ignition system. It comprises a spark-plug, a high-tension wire, and a set of systems to control ignition timing. Older bikes use magneto or Delco ignition systems that use contact-breaker (CB) points to time the spark delivery. Modern bikes use electronically-controlled digital ignition systems that time the spark by picking up on impulses from generated magnetic fields.
