An engine breathes through the valves in the cylinder-head, located at the top of each combustion chamber. The inlet valve is always larger than the exhaust valve, and two of each comprise a four-valve head. More valves allow an engine to breathe better and reduce frictional losses. In a four-valve setup, the spark-plug is located optimally in the centre of the combustion chamber.
