Joseph’s Winning Streak Broken
WITH THE END OF this weekend, there is only one more round left to decide a champion. In this closely-contested category, Joseph has continued to maintain a healthy lead but, as witnessed earlier, his competition is not going to let him run away without a fight. Let’s take a look at what these racers have been up to.
The favourite for the weekend, Joseph Mathew (Chennai), started from pole position. Behind him, Syed Muzammil Ali (Bengaluru) and Lalmawipuia (Aizawl) revved their engines in second and third places respectively as they waited for the lights to go out. Joseph was ousted from the front almost immediately by Syed. For the following three laps, Syed and Joseph fought it out at the front until they were joined by Malsawmdawngliana (Aizawl) who promptly took the lead and held on to it until the last lap. With just one lap to go, Joseph pulled a move out of nowhere and passed Malsawmdawngliana, finishing just one-hundredth of a second ahead of the racer from Aizawl. With this win Joseph has extended his winning streak to five in a row. By the end of the race, Lalmawipuia had fallen behind the duo at the front and had to settle for third place.
The grid for the second race was arranged according to the winners from the previous day. Contrary to his usual exhibition of brilliance, Joseph made a few mistakes during the course of the race and struggled to recover lost time. In such a closely-contested event, even Joseph’s level of experience and talent proved insufficient to get him back to the top. Malsawmdawngliana made quick work of passing Joseph and built up a commendable lead. Soon he was joined by Sachin Chaudhary (Ahmedabad) and both of them were engaged in a fight for the top spot. Spectators watched with bated breath as the duo pulled out all the stops to secure the win. In the end, Malsawmdawngliana defended his position down the main straight and stayed a step ahead of Sachin to cross the finish line first. Joseph arrived more than two seconds later as the final man on the podium.
At the end of round three, Joseph leads the championship with 56 points. Malsawmdawngliana and Lalmawipuia are at 39 and 31 points respectively. Going into the final round in Delhi, it looks like Malsawmdawngliana is the only one close enough to challenge Joseph.
