Cargo activities at AAI airports
AAI is set to kick off the growth this year with various plans and programmes in its list. The recent activities and achievements of AAI pertaining to air cargo movement portray the new face of the public sector undertaking.
Stage set to finalise the private agency for Vizag airport
The Airports Authority of India (AAI) is all set to finalise a private agency for management and operation of the domestic air cargo terminal at Visakhapatnam Airport. Simultaneously, the authority is seeking Customs facility for handling cargo bound for international destinations. The facility will be built around 407 sqm which will carry out cargo handling operations in the old airport terminal building. Further, an open-paved surface of 400 sqm will be handed over for facilitating air cargo movement. The agency will be allowed to handle domestic cargo for five years, after which a two-year extension can be given if AAI agrees. The tenders have been floated for selecting the agency to handle domestic cargo and it will get finalised soon. Once the agency is finalised, all the operations will be handled by it.
Currently, around four tonnes of cargo is being handled on the domestic routes with majority being moved to either Chennai or Kolkata. Meanwhile, the Customs facility for handling international cargo is likely to take another three to four months. The airport is expecting a spike in handling of cargo, especially perishable goods and pharma products, which are currently being exported by companies in the region through Hyderabad or Chennai.
