Colachel Harbour in TN to become a Major Port
The Tamil Nadu Government has given its assent to the Union Government’s request to develop the Colachel Harbour into a Major Port with transhipment facilities. This makes the tiny fishing harbour in Kanyakumari district the fourth Major Port in the state.
According to ministry sources, the ‘letter of consent’ from the Government of Tamil Nadu to the Union Government was received on September 1. Commenting on the development, Pon Radhakrishnan, Union Minister of State for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping, said, “The Tamil Nadu Government has given its consent for the port project, which will be fully financed by the Centre. The state’s nod came after Nitin Gadkari, Union Minister for Road Transport, Highways and Shipping wrote to the state government in this regard a few months ago.”
